Meg Thomas-Cary
My True Passion is Writing
I've loved performing my whole life and never intend to stop doing it, but music wouldn't be what it is for me had I not begun writing. I write for myself, primarily pop and R&B, but I also enjoy writing for projects or even commercial jingles. Nothing expands creativity by having to work through constraints.
Singing, Playing piano, teaching, Song-writing
Meg, the daughter of a musician, spent her childhood surrounded by different and wonderful kinds of music. Beginning at age five, she joylessly studied classical piano for three years before leaving that to give the viola a try.
In her years of learning, she picked up and put down numerous instruments before realizing that singing was what she really wanted to do. She performed in choirs all through school both in and out of educational settings in styles as diverse as jazz, classical, and even gospel.
While she always has been writing (stories, poetry, and even instrumental compositions), Meg began writing pop and jazz songs in 2006 and since then has continued to grow as a songwriter.
At Columbia College, she was encouraged to take another look at piano and began studying pop jazz piano in 2012.
In the Fall of 2012, Meg began playing in a Columbia College Chicago project band, later named Bigspeak with other talented Columbia students and still works with those individuals today.
In the Fall of 2013, Meg traveled to Germany in an exchange between Columbia and the Popakademie in Mannheim. She learned a great deal about making music, writing, music, and collaborating with others.
In 2014, Meg began her graduate degree in pop vocal performance in Mannheim at the Popakademie. During her time there, she not only performed original music with her bands, Post Phunk Pasta and MEGASM but worked as a cover musician with bands such as the Wright Thing and The Bishops, as well as teaching private voice at a music school in Worms, Germany. After two and a half years and completing her thesis, she returned to Chicago to continue her career as a performer and songwriter and hopes to teach private voice lessons to many diverse students.
I have been taking vocal lessons both in and out of school for the past ten years and have been singing in choirs for over fifteen.
I have a background in piano and use it for self accompanying as well as writing.
I am now most interested in teaching private voice as well as being a songwriting coach for aspiring songwriters.
I'm proud to announce my return from Germany to the Chicagoland area.
Now that I've returned I'm looking to expand the areas in which I perform as well as getting more into private vocal instruction. Now that I've been teaching privately for over three years and at a school, I hope to involve myself more in working with students who have aspirations of singing pop, jazz, and/or musical theater.
